Story Behind The Name & The Maps...
Tides have always ruled my summers in Maine. I was taught early that low tides are for exploring by foot - shore lines, tide pools and even tidal islands. My grandfather made things with the shells he'd discover along the coast - so I never left the beach empty-handed. Occasionally, we'd sell his work at the end of our driveway.
Maybe ten years ago, along with sea glass and whatever else caught my curiosity, I began collecting the rope and stray trap wiring suddenly so prevalent along the shore. Remembering my grandfather's work, I began tinkering with the maps of Maine - first for family, then steadily for friends. And as I began making more maps, I never had a hard time finding more rope and trap debris. I equally enjoy the finding and creating elements of making these maps. And it's a thrill to think that residents, businesses and visitors may be interested in hanging a piece in their family room, lobby or restaurant. So it made sense to connect any commercial sale of these to (a) a group representing the lobstermen who lose the traps, and (b) a group that promotes the joy and benefits of art - regardless of age, income or experience - in the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport community. |
