Lobster Trap Waste...

Picture Pictured here: snarled rope, wire mesh and buoys tangled at Cleave's Cove, Kennebunkport, ME.

Each year, as many as 10% of all lobster traps and gear are lost to storms, boat propellers and attrition.  Most lobster trap components are non-biodegradable.  Many lost traps  wash ashore - often in splintered parts.  In a tangled mix of wire mesh,  buoys, rope and seaweed.

Tide and Seek integrates lobster trap waste that collects along our shoreline with traditional Maine beach treasures to create artwork celebrating coastal Maine.

Tide and Seek's "Maine Maps" are comprised of as many as 300 unique beach treasures and lobster trap remnants - merged together in the shape of Maine.

While each "Maine Map" is different, everything used to create the maps first washed ashore somewhere along the coast of Kennebunkport, ME.
From Cleave's Cove to Vaughn's Island, Turbat's Creek to Goose Rocks Beach. Tide and Seek artwork is the product of low tide adventures along the expanded shorelines and tidal islands of Kennebunkport.

Repurposed lobster trap debris, merged with beach treasures. Creating a colorful conversation piece that compliments any home, office or dorm room.

Our Maine Maps are available in three sizes:
  • 11" x 14" :  $129 + shipping
  • 14" x 20" :  $199 + shipping
  • 24" x 30" :  $349
The maps combine Maine lobster traps' distinctly colored wire, rope, buoys, bands, netting and even trap tags with clam, scallop, mussel and oyster shells, native lobster and crab shells of all sizes, whelk, limpet, slipper and moon snails, sand dollars, sea urchins and sea glass. All in the shape of the State of Maine.

Each Maine Map is protected in a glass-encased frame - ensuring long-term preservation of map components.   All Tide and Seek Maine Maps come with a lifetime guarantee.  Should any map ever begin to break down, simply return the damaged map and Tide and Seek will replace it with a new one.

For a Cause...

PictureA portion of each "Maine Map" sale is reinvested to support the local lobstering community

Purchasing a Maine Map supports the lobster industry.  Tide and Seek donates a portion of each Maine Map sale directly to the Maine Lobster Community Alliance's (MLCA) Lobstermen Relief Fund - dedicated to supporting distressed commercial lobstermen and their families.

Tide and Seek often incorporates recognizable markings - even tags from local lobstermen - into our artwork.   If a Maine Map includes the specific  name of a local lobsterman, Tide and Seek makes the MLCA Relief Fund donation in the name of the specific lobsterman whose tag is featured on that map.
